In the current climate change context, we’re striving to make our homes as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. On this page you can find out what we’re up to and how you can actively contribute to our project.
We thank you in advance for your positive impact and your contribution, which we hope will be as great as possible, to a more sustainable world…
Reduced electricity consumption
- Close doors and windows when heating or air conditioning is on.
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
- Switch off all electrical appliances (TV, radio, etc.) when not in use.
- Turn off the heating or air-conditioning when you leave the house or an unoccupied room.
- Set heating to 19°C and air conditioning to 26°C.
- When using your washing machine, choose energy-saving programs.
- Use the umbrella dryer available near the pool, rather than the electric dryer.
Reduced water consumption
- Use the dishwasher (well-stocked) rather than washing up by hand.
- When using your washing machine, choose water-saving programs.
- Turn off the water when washing your hands or teeth.
- Opt for a quick (4 minutes maximum), lukewarm shower rather than a hot bath.
- Use economical double-push flushes with small and large quantities of water.
- Cover the pool with the cover or bubble wrap if not in use (except during heatwaves).
- Do not "bomb" the pool.
Waste sorting
- Glass: metal baskets are available in the kitchen near the fridge for storing empties before disposing of them in one of the glass bubbles located near the stadium/City Park or in downtown Montreal, along the highway (see map).
- Paper/cardboard: metal baskets are available in the kitchen near the fridge for storing paper and cardboard (Caution: no cardboard!!!) before disposing of them in the paper bubble located in the center of Montreal, along the road (see map).
- A "yellow" garbage can is available in the kitchen (near the fridge) for sorting plastics, metal cans, trays, tubes, bags, etc. (see the explanatory page on the fridge or in the welcome booklet). Garbage bags can be deposited in the containers provided near the Mairie de Montréal (see map).
- Composting area installed Q1/2024 near the boulodrome for household waste and biodegradable materials. Wooden compost bin (Douglas fir) made in Ardèche.
- All other waste goes into the "classic" garbage can also available in the kitchen (stainless steel garbage can near the terrace door). Garbage bags can be deposited in the containers provided near the Mairie de Montréal (see map).
Actions implemented
- Installation of solar panels: the house is powered by 12 solar panels with a total output of 4920 W, representing an annual production of just over 6 MWh.
- Green electricity supplier (Urban Solar) with storage of our unconsumed electricity production in virtual batteries for reuse at night or when the photovoltaic plant produces little.
- Use of a home automation application to: control heating/air conditioning as well as certain lighting/appliances, monitor overall electricity production/consumption as well as specific electrical appliances, manage pool filtration and chlorination regulation, control alarm system and computer network, etc...
- Use of a variable-speed pool pump: 66% electricity savings compared with a conventional pump, i.e. 2 MWh savings per year.
- Use of low-energy LED light bulbs wherever possible.
- Use of eco-friendly products on a daily basis: shower gel, dishwashing soap, compostable or recyclable coffee pods, etc.
- Use of reusable dispensers (for dishwashing soap and shower gel), to limit disposable packaging.
- Waste sorting: glass, paper/cardboard, "yellow" and "classic" garbage cans...
- Ecoresponsible ECOFLO autonomous wastewater treatment with biofilter using coconut fragments to naturally treat wastewater.
Project(s)
- Installation of a charging station for electric or hybrid cars - currently being tested.
